Fellowship to participate in "Condition Critical: Covering Children's Health," March 14-18, 2004
Alarmed by the spike in sexually transmitted diseases among teenagers, I applied for and received a fellowship to attend a five-day conference in Adelphi, Maryland, through the University of Maryland's Casey Journalism Center on Children and Families (which is separate from the aforementioned program). At this eye-opening gathering, 30 other journalists and I learned about the latest pediatric medical advances; the rising toll from health issues including obesity, asthma, mental illness, sexually transmitted diseases and abuse; and trends in health coverage. A small group of us took a behind-the-scenes tour of a pediatric ER, which bolstered my understanding that children are not little adults and require specialized care.
